The Forest Hills Sticker Kid is losing it

Posted by Steve on Saturday, April 28th, 2007

I hate graffiti, but I’ve always had to admit I kinda like the Forest Hills Sticker Kid. If you spend any time in the more densely populated parts of the Hills, you probably know who I mean: the guy who slaps down stickers all over town saying things like “BUSH = EVIL LIAR” and “BLAIR = bLIAR.” (The Flickr photo linked is somewhat atypical of the Sticker Kid’s body of work, as “BUSH” is not crossed out in a different color of marker.) I continue to hold the unfashionable belief that graffiti is nothing but selfish, landscape-marring vandalism, but political graffiti gets a bit of a pass from me because it’s political, and that’s awesome.

However, the Sticker Kid’s sanity may be slowly slipping away, perhaps as a consequence of oppression from the ReTHUGlican war machine and the rest of the military-industrial complex. On a walk today, I saw one of his efforts that wasn’t political at all — it seemed to be a personal attack on one of his acquaintances’ intelligence. Then, mere blocks later, smack in the middle of an assemblage of stickers, was this: “MOON WALK WAS A HOAX.” Seriously, Sticker Kid? That’s tin-foil-hat stuff right there. In terms of mainstream academic acceptance, “MOON WALK WAS A HOAX” is roughly on par with Holocaust denial.

Maybe it’s time to stop taking the Sticker Kid seriously. My world has officially been rocked. If you can’t trust an “overweight 20-ish kid” who spends large amounts of his free time creating and surreptitiously posting stickers expressing trite political sentiments, who can you trust?
