Retail roundup

Posted by Steve on Sunday, November 18th, 2007

I dropped by the Queens Boulevard and Union Turnpike Starbucks location this evening, even managing to peek into the paper-covered window, and it looks to be almost ready to open. I’d be shocked if it weren’t operational within a month, probably sooner. It looks like there might be an outdoor seating area, too, which is a bit of an odd choice for that exhaust-ridden intersection but kinda cool nonetheless. Other big openings after the jump!

  • Bamboo Moves NYC is a new “tai chi/yoga place” in the hideous shopping arcade on Austin that always seems to attract interesting businesses these days. That’s gotta be considered a great addition to the neighborhood.
  • I had no intention of mentioning this because there are a hundred of these places, and yet Gothamist really seemed to love the new Restaurant Samarkand on QB in Rego Park. They’ve got tarragon soda, so that’s interesting. I will also say this: definitely the nicest awning of any Bukharian meatmonger in town.
  • Yet another women’s-clothing store is coming to Austin: Ice. Decent name, with an eye-catching sign that suggests an expensive gym or something. Maybe it’ll be a little younger and classier than some of the others. But still, we don’t really need another one of these places.
  • Speaking of a little younger and classier than the other women’s clothing stores, Body and Soul Boutique, which moved from Metropolitan to the old Austin location of my beloved Ralph’s Italian Ices less than a year ago, now has an actual sign in the form of a flag. It looks sharp, I think. I never thought the place looked complete before. I still liked Ralph’s better.
