Who owns this place? Tried to do a whois but it says improperly formatted address.
“Now you can get products unique to the Internet in a real store dedicated to the best of the best! Interested in seeing the products we offer? Click to go shopping (coming soon)”
The real internet is not located in Forest Hills for that matter.

70-54 Austin Street is for the ABCO Master lock and key facility according to a web search. Isn’t the locksmith on Austin street still in business?

I dunno but those stock shots on main page look awfully pixelated and if they are about the “net” they shouldn’t be. Unless they stole them in low res. I dunno, looks shady to me.

Oy. The schedule has them closed on Saturday.
Forget AOL, I’d like to re-learn the old 2400 baud modem initiation commands.

A modem is just a modulator demodulator. Pretty simplistic device that is outdated. I remember those good old days of the Bell 103 with frequency shift keying at 300 bps.
Trust me Forest Hills is not the center of the internet. That will only take place in the Valley or by first rate universities. Bramson Ort college does not meet that definition. Nothing of interest here.

One has to wonder what the landlord was thinking when they entered into the lease. Do they really think that this business will be able to make a go of it? The whole thing sounds a little bizarre.

The modem is not outdated. There are still people, such as myself, that use a modem to dial into an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get on the Internet. It is not simple at all. Granted life is a bit easier now with Procomm Plus, but initiating the modem using command strings are still in use. Somehow. Somewhere.
Forest Hills may eventually overtake San Jose as the capital and center of the Internet. The area has just been upgraded with all new infrastructure, and is home to most gifted and talented BBS sysops. If this new facility offers CD-ROM courses on Gopher, it would prove the neighborhood has moved beyond San Jose.

I had a friend who was a BBS Sysop who was also computer programmers programming in Cobol which is a business language at the time. Ran a BBS out on Long Island. Modems are indeed simplistic technological devices. During one point in time Hayes Smartmodem, Zyxel and US Robotics were the bread and butter of the modem industry.
Gopher, why not Hytelnet? Smart folks exist in the ether.
Whats with this anti AJ023 stuff and is he really being stalked?

Modems are not simple devices, as they are critical to translate digital signals through analog lines. I don’t expect the average Gerard/Parker area resident to understand the different modulation technologies, but there have been many changes since the old frequency shift keying that you have mentioned. The true center of the Internet would utilize multiple, more up-to-date modulation technologies such as phase shift keying, and QPSK. With the recent infrastructure upgrades in the area, knowledge of these technologies are extremely important. That is why it is a good idea to have a facility that is able to provide awareness on these issues.
Gopher is more well known than HyTelnet, hence it makes sense to teach a more prominent technology.
There is no anti-AJ sentiment, and there has been no negative mention of him. Why have you assumed so?

Sorry, requiring comment registration kills commenting dead. Non-anonymity is what the forums are for. However, you want to hear something amusing? I just deleted a non-spam comment for the first time in this history of this site because it was personally abusive, and then I checked the IP address to see what else this person had posted, and it turned out it was posted by the very same person it was abusing. Imagine that!

Someone could have stalked a wifi connection to get back at someone too if it was open. Lots of possibilities here. Multiple users, single person, open internet IP address, could be anything, never assume.

SoundslikeWifi, did you “stalk” this person’s WiFi connection to post your comment in order to prove your point?

Now I think I know why Queens living sucks. As my cousin says “Its QUEENS!” and she lives in Manhattan!
Forest Hills has subpar restaurants, subpar housing, and subpar everything else.
Lots of nice places in the world but Forest Hills has always been subpar.
Best cities: San Francisco, Seattle, parts of Philadelphia including Center City, Multiple parts of Manhattan.
Forest Hills is below par. As having been to multiple places in the USA, Forest Hills is a place where you get stuck, you don’t choose it. You can’t afford the nicer places so you live here because its still a place thats safe with decent commute to Manhattan.

Excuse me subpar/aj or whoever you are, I disagree as i chose Forest Hills over Manhattan. i used to live in Manhattan and i found it to be to much for me. I love coming home to a more peaceful place and i get to pay less for it!
The irony of it is, It can take longer to get from some parts of Manhattan to another part than it takes from FH. It all depends on where you live in Manhattan–there’s nothing that’s convenient to everyting that Manhattan has to offer.
The best part of it all is that I have so much more money to spend, whether in Manhattan or Forest Hills.
By the way, my hunch is that you’e aj because nobody else is so judgemental about “low caliber’ or “subpar.” You like Manhattan–fine. I like Forest Hills. Just don’t judge others.

Queens is indeed sucky as are these forums. The fun aint in Queens. The people of Queens speak out on forums like this and have no real life.
Too much time wasting away chatting on forums rather than living life in the Real World. Theres a reason why Austin Street is low caliber as well as the populous in the area.
I don’t hang out/live in Forest Hills and never will. But from the caliber of the intellectual discussions on this board and from this thread, its pretty scary what this hood is like.
If you enjoy it thats great. Stay there.
I’ll enjoy my place in a very high cultured area. Why did I even bother to post this? Guess I just am fed up with the area cause some guy I know who lives in Forest Hills tries to peddle Cellular phones on me.

QCP - your writing style is so conspicuous. Reading your posts is sometimes the highlight of my day. You try so hard to be something you’re not, and it is hilarious. You wrote that you “dont live in Forest Hills and never will,” so how can you be “fed up”? I wish you luck!

Who the hell is this guy knocking Forest Hills? I lost my job and can’t even afford Forest Hills. You’re a BUTT SPOILED PIG. I am living with a friend now and can barely even make my apartment rent. Go get the hell out of here if you don’t like Forest Hills. Geez. Some people are so lame.

Internet comments on here are lame. No justification, random idiotic thoughts out of people’s heads. So why do I post this comment right now. Because I admit by posting this I am lame and if I really had a life I wouldn’t be here!

“It’s Queens”????? Who is this dude/dudette? I’m very proud of where I’m from and I love living in FH; I also don’t buy that you’ve been to all these fabulous places because, typical internet, people can fluff up their lives and often do.
Anyway, we have many great places in Queens, wonderful artists, actors/actresses that hail from Queens, and great history. What’s not to be proud of!

Hey, everyone, I’m back from my national lampoon of a European vacation, and imagine my surprise to see — well, very little new when I got back. However, I do have to mention one thing that caught my eye: a strange new store (or “shop,” as the British say) coming soon to the heart of Austin Street, in the location of one of the former leather-goods stores: It’s Your Internet, a place where you — yes, you! — can experience this very Internet in non-digital form. “Finally,” the sign cryptically boasts, “brick and mortar contains the Internet!” Uh, right!
In the window is a long, long list of all the things you’ll be able to do at It’s Your Internet. You can start a blog, just like this one! You can make friends on MySpace! But my favorite, hands down, is “learn AOL.” I can’t think of a better use of your Internet time. In 1996.
Look, the truth is I have no idea what this place is or what you can do there, besides learn AOL, of course. The website currently gives up precious few clues, even though I was under the impression it was my Internet. We’ll find out.
London and Barcelona were fabulous, by the by. I highly recommend both destinations. And thanks so much, Mickie, for contributing in my absence. Feel free to post all you’d like in the future.
