  • Biking is not a transportation alternative for the masses. It is very disconcerting in reading how a small minority of vocal bikers are destroying infrastructure in the city in order to make NYC safe for their hobby. Who advocates for the vast majority of car drivers!?

  • I wrote to TA weeks ago asking for help with an intersection that is holding up the implementation of the Grand Ave Truck Bypass Plan and am still waiting for a reply. It’s a shame this committee is only about bike riding because I thought they might be able to help with this issue. It appears they are not interested.

  • Christina, you did not contact the Queens Committee, you contacted the main TA office from what I understand from your streetsblog post. I would also recommend that when you require assitance from a community group you try being polite about them on other blogs like say Queens Crap, where we are routinely accused of being in bed with developers (whom I have never met with). You have a bad attitude and unfortunately that seems to be holding up whatever project it is you want to work on. Beyond two nasty posts attacking TA, one here and one on Streetsblog I have never heard about this project.

  • Christina,

Bad-mouthing an organization in public like you’re doing is petty and unprofessional. I suggest you change your attitude. Or perhaps you’re not really interested in the assistance and have another motive?

  • This is typical Christina Wilkinson. Deal with her at your own risk, because she and her group do not know how to act professionally and in a civil manner, they only know how to attack everyone they come across. They claim they are trying to help the community, but the majority of the community are fed up with them (and her) and their always trying to nastily impose their opinions on everyone else.

  • “Beyond two nasty posts attacking TA, one here and one on Streetsblog I have never heard about this project.”

Well then, it appears the Queens Committee is failing at looking out for the needs of those outside of bike riders. This DOT initiative has been in the works for more than 3 years, so you definitely should have heard of it.

I don’t see why I would post nice comments on another blog about a group that basically ignored my requests for assistance. I also haven’t seen the Queens Crapper post anything that says TA is in bed with developers.

Furthermore, it was only after I posted on Streetsblog that I received a response from TA, who I tried contacting politely with no response. It’s interesting that you just happened to see that comment since they removed it with breakneck speed. After I posted the comment here, I actually was contacted by the person who says they will help with the problem. Complaining publicly is usually not pretty, but sometimes is necessary.

  • “If you’re interested in bicycling around our great borough, and representin’ central Queens, this is the committe for you.”

God, I don’t know where this Christina chick got the idea that the TA’s Queens Committee was just about bicycles. You have a bad attitude, Heff, and unfortunately that seems to be preventing you from helping those who seek your assistance with non-bike related projects. Beyond a nasty comment attacking the person seeking help, I have never heard of you. TA has not done a thing about protecting pedestrian communities in Queens from truck traffic.

  • Crapper does this weird thing once in a while where he takes another person’s words and uses the exact same words to criticize the other person. He must think he is being witty and he doesn’t realize how annoyingly idiotic he sounds when he does this.
Keep attacking everyone Crapper and Christina, it hasn’t gotten you anywhere in the past and it will just keep isolating you in the future.

  • ““If you’re interested in bicycling around our great borough, and representin’ central Queens, this is the committee for you.”

Yep, that’s what I wrote, but if you notice, I did not say that people interested in traffic calming and improving pedestrian safety should stay away from the meetings or be forcibly kicked out.

In fact, one of the agenda items at the meeting was about reducing truck traffic on Astoria Boulevard and surrounding areas. If you had attended the meeting, you would have heard the details, but since you didn’t, I’ll summarize it in a later post.

What I wrote was my personal opinion, not the opinion of the TAQC as a whole. Thanks for electing me their official spokesperson, but hey, I already have a job and this blog to maintain. Keep in mind that blogs are personal diaries, sounding boards and editorials, not official spokespeople or journalists.

  • Hey Mickie I want to say thanks for taking the time to give us the Queens Committee a shout out for our meeting on your blog (which I didn’t do in my previous post… my apologies). As you’ve reported before our group is fairly Western Queens centric due to the majority of our volunteers (myself included) being from W. Queens, but like I’ve said previously, we are trying to branch out and thanks to involved Central Queens folks like yourself we’re making some baby steps. I’m sorry if anything I said acted as a lightning rod to derail what should have been a simple post.

  • “Crapper, you have a short memory.” Yeah, I guess I do. Please enlighten me.

“He must think he is being witty and he doesn’t realize how annoyingly idiotic he sounds when he does this.”
No, I wasn’t doing it to seem witty, I was doing it to show how annoyingly idiotic Heffron is for lashing out at those who are seeking help instead of extending an olive branch. He also hasn’t explained where on my blog I attacked TA for being in bed with developers.

Western Queens Centric for QATC purposes = Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside

Other Western Queens nabes include Glendale, Ridgewood, Middle Village, Maspeth. But no one at QATC gives a royal damn about those areas, though. Why? Not enough bike riders from a certain economic class!

  • Crapper, you can do your own research. But, from a glance at your blog, it’s clear you’re not into that.

Queens TransAlt meeting - TONIGHT!

Posted by Mickie T on Monday, July 14th, 2008

This is just a reminder that the Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee (TAQC)  will be holding its monthly meeting this evening at 6:30 PM at the Greater Astoria Historical Society, 35-20 Broadway, on the 4th floor of the Thomas M. Quinn & Sons Memorials and Funeral Home. Easy to get to from both the Steinway Street stop on the R, V lines and the Broadway stop on the N, W lines.

If you’re interested in bicycling around our great borough, and representin’ central Queens, this is the committe for you.

Thanks to comrade blogger, Forest Hills 72, for inquiring about the TA Queens Committee’s mission. Read the comments page to learn more about the inner workings and goals of the TAQC, and read my Forest Hills-Park Slope round-trip biking route.

There will be a packed agenda and lots to discuss, and lots of ways to get involved.  I also look forward to getting everyone’s opinion on a variety of topics.

Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee advocates on behalf of cyclists, pedestrians, and mass transit users, in Queens.  They meet the 2nd Monday each month (unless otherwise noted) at the Greater Astoria Historical Society from 6:30p-8p.  All are welcome to join.
