I agree about the building being an architectural disaster. Those columns in the middle of the store/aisles are the worst, but I don’t think the building was brand new. They just renovated what already existed there.

The building is not new. They renovated a building that was already there which is a big improvement over what was there before. I’m just thankful that there is some retail action there now instead of an empty dilapadated building. Like all NYC buildings you can’t have everything that the suburbs have, i.e. wide ailses and store organization that makes sense. You just have to make due with what you are given. Some people are never satisfied.

You’d be surprised how easily satisfied I am. I don’t have any issues with the structure or layout of the building; I just think it’s ugly.

I agree, Steve.
Also, I hate to say it… I am glad there is a Trader Joe’s, but I actually prefer the Amish Market in the Atlas Park Mall.

For all I care, TJ’s could be in a mud hut. With the economy going the way it is, it is great to have some lower-priced alternatives to our outrageously-high local supermarkets. The prices on food seem to go up weekly, and this is only the tip of the iceberg as we contend with higher oil prices and the sub-prime mortgage debacle.

The price of food may *seem* to go up weekly, but it doesn’t, no matter how many canned phrases are thrown around. (You forgot to include “the threat of global warming”)
In any case, I prefer Amish Market to Trader Joe’s, too, but I hate paying $3 for parking.

Sure it does:

Rising food prices… yes, that’s a problem everywhere. But the “subprime mortgage debacle” is *not* a problem in Forest Hills:

I wish you could zoom in farther. Looks like they’re a pretty big problem in the Gardens, but not in the rest of the neighborhood.

I heard that you don’t have to pay for parking @ Atlas Park on Tuesdays now - better than nothing!

Those pillars drive me nuts. It seems like they could have tried to do something to minimize the effect of them on people trying to get through the isle.
One thing I have to say, though is that in the two times I’ve been there, no matter how crowded it was, the checkout has been superquick.

parking is free on Tuesdays w/ purchase…and also early Saturday morning with some sort of purchase. It’s all on their website.

Don’t wanna pay for parking? Then take the Q23 bus and schlep the stuff home with the rest of us (OK, with *me*)! What are you people, suburbanites or something?:)

Q23 doesn’t go to Atlas Park.
Try again!

Sorry, Tom, I thought y’all were talking about Trader Joe’s, the original subject. The 23 does indeed go right there. For Atlas Park you can transfer to the Q54, which now takes a detour down Cooper Avenue for the convenience of AP shoppers. Or if it’s a nice day you can get off the 23 at Woodhaven Boulevard and stroll down Cooper the rest of the way, perhaps stopping in at Moving Right Along to check out the secondhand furniture.

Pat - So is the Forum West going to be more of a community paper and less of a biased attack tool for some divisive Middle Village community activists?

Wait ’til you see who rips your boy Pinky a new one in this week’s issue. You just may be surprised…

Pat - I really could care less about Gallagher, I don’t like him much either. All of these rip-jobs and attacks of yours and your colleagues have made everyone I know in Middle Village sour on the JPCA. Forum West is not an objective journal, it is a biased attack tool.

How does one get to Trader Joe’s from the 71st Continental train station? Would I be able to walk it? Landmark directions please, thanks!

The easiest way to get to TJ’s from the 71st-Continental train station is to hop on the Q23 bus — the stop is right outside the deli, just off the corner where Vitamin Shoppe is. Get off on Metropolitan Avenue at Trotting Course Lane, just past the railroad trestle, then cross Metropolitan and you’ll be there. You can’t miss TJ’s; it’s in the big building with Michaels’ craft store, with the parking lot in front. The bus ride will take about 15-20 minutes.

You know what’d be nice? If the brand-new building housing Trader Joe’s wasn’t an architectural disaster.
