The issue concerns a parasitic worm that occurs naturally in Fish. Without getting into the details if it occurs naturally inside the flesh of the fish it's still kosher.
It's settled law going back to Maimonides and even earlier. Anyone handling kosher fish knows that to be kosher a fish has to have fins and scales. If it doesn't it ain't kosher so forget about the red color better find a new fish monger.

FHGUY: That you are a married guy with 3 kids is about as likely as there is an Easter Bunny. Having a family and supporting Gay Marriage are not mutually exclusive, but having a family creates different priorities with respect to issues. If you had a family you would never have written something so obnoxious. Most families are a lot more worried about the economy than they are about Gay Marriage.

This story sounds fishy to me and in fact, according to the group, the story is a hoax. According to one of the heads of the group, lox is kosher. Apparently the group claims the whole thing is some kind of misinterpretation of one of their reports on kosher food, which they say various media groups then blew out of proportion. Basically, if I understand it correctly, they are saying that you can't use the red color of lox to determine if other fish are kosher. Apparently some practices may render non kosher fish appear red and so if there are any doubts, they advise people to ask their Rabbi.

Fashion Girl is exactly right. The fact that Talbot doesn't realize that there are many gay people that have children shows how self-absorbed he really is.

"Maybe when you're responsible for someone other than yourself you'll understand."

Talbot says this and then has the nerve to say that I'm "obnoxious"? What's really obnoxious is Talbot assuming that he knows anything about me because of viewpoints I have expressed. What makes him think that I am not responsible for anyone other than myself? For all he knows, I could be married with 3 kids or a single father. Sorry to break it to Talbot but being responsible for someone other than oneself and supporting same-sex marriage are not mutually exclusive. His idea that all straight people with families place a low priority on same-sex marriage is also totally unsupported by any facts. In fact, there are many straight married people who realize that granting full equal rights to gay people is not something that is in competition with their priorities and it is instead the fair and right thing to do.

But noo, they have to debate about some microbe that might be in lox. What's next something in the chicken that'll cause Bubbye's Soup to be trayf.

If the Chabadniks on Eastern Parkway are still eating lox that's good enough for me.

Fashion Girl: Now you're really starting to sound silly. I think the guy is worrying about his livelihood and his family because of what's going on in the economy, not because he's gay and can't get married. I'm certainly not the one who's stopping him from that. (Just pointing out the inconvenient reality others have different opinions and/or priorities and they vote too.) Somehow I think it's maybe because he's worried about putting a roof over their head and food on the table. Somehow I think that's the priority no matter who you are. The right to get married doesn't do much good if you're trying to get by. But then I have to live in the real world and I have responsiblities to others beside myself. I think most people are in the same boat and are more concerned that our leaders deal with the economic, fiscal and security issues at hand first.

When you grow up and you are responsible to others you'll understand what priorities mean. FHGUY really doesn't, his remarks were obnoxious and I used a metaphor to point it out. Even a gay guy would punch him out for that one. Frankly I don't think placing a priority on taking care of my family is something that's gonna get me punched in the teeth by anyone nor does it make me self absorbed.

From Eyewitness News

Eyewitness News

CROWN HEIGHTS (WABC) -- It's a staple of Jewish culinary culture.

Lox - smoked salmon.

But now, there's something of a controversy over the thinly sliced pink fish.

A small group of orthodox rabbis in New Jersey is now banning smoked salmon because the group claims it's no longer kosher.

Tell the people at Bunch-O-Bagels in Crown Heights that they can't have lox with their bagels, and you can imagine the reaction.

"I mean, Jews have to have their lox," Rabbi Chaim Fogelman said.

Fogelman says the question was settled years ago - whether the naturally-occurring parasites in seafood make it unsuitable for kosher consumption.

But a small ultra-orthodox sect in Monsey, New York recently released an order declaring a variety of fish off-limits.

The sect, Chevra Mehadrin, did not return our phone calls.

FHGUY: I'm not questioning who supports and who doesn't support it in abstract. Just ask them where it is on their list of priorities and see how few place it number one or even in the top 5. You go tell the guy who's worried about his livelihood and his family that he's selfish because he doesn't agree that gay marriage is the most important thing concerning him. Let me know what he thinks after you get back from the dentist to replace the two teeth he knocked out of your mouth.

I don't know who Kennedy has been hanging out with, but his description of gay people is about as far away from the truth as if I said that all married straight people are monogomous. And I never said that there aren't some gay people who have anonymous sex. I said that being gay is about a lot more than just sex and that defining gay people by one sex act which they may or may not engage in is just plain wrong.

I guess it never occurred to Talbot that there are many straight people in this city and country who can make sure they provide for themselves and their children while still realizing that civil rights are just as important (even if this issue doesn't directly affect them) and are supportive of full civil rights for gay people. It's very amusing that Talbot calls me "self-absorbed". The definition of self-absorbed is when you only care about social issues that have a direct affect on you and your family. Thankfully, there are many straight people who aren't as self-absorbed as Talbot and can see that supporting full equal rights for gay people takes nothing away from their ability to provide for themselves and their families.

You're a very fortunate fellow that this is what's giving you sleepless nights. Well I guess the rest of us shouldn't be worried about such trivial things like taking care of our families, making sure there's a roof over their heads and food on the table. That we can provide an environment where our kids can get an education and lead happy healthy independent lives. Pardon us for being very selfish in that regard.

I was talking to a few staff members at the new mall this past weekend and they tell me that Toys R Us is mulling signing a lease at the former Circuit City Space and will look to open in the fall.

I think FH guy might be a washed up Act Up member. Sorry to say, but the gay lifestyle, and yes I say lifestyle does involve anonymous sex among many in its community. Lets see, Forest Park, Central Parks The Ramble, cars parked at phone booths along LIE reststops (yes, members of the gay community actually have all the phone numbers of the phones at the stop and they call the number when another manly man pulls up). I don't see that activity in the hetro community unless I watch Jersey Shore.

"As for priorities I don't think my friends who are unemployed or worried about their jobs and businesses are laying awake at night worrying about whether or not gay couples should have the right to marry. "

Of course not Talbot--and this speaks volumes about you and your friends because it shows that you only care about an issue if it affects you personally. Fortunately, there are many others posting on this forum and in the general population who see how wrong it is to deny gay people their basic civil rights and feel that granting these rights should be a priority no matter what is happening with the economy or the unemployment rate.

fashion girl I would suggest that your generalizations stir up the very hate that you protest. Now, now - not all conservatives jump to the conclusions that you suggest, just as not all liberals are intolerant as TR is implying. Don't you understand the irony of your comments?

"But does the vision of their child sticking their private up ones behind drive to them therapy wondering where they went "wrong"."

Kennedy, this may come as a shock to you, but being gay is not only about sex. It is just as much about romance, love, companionship and spending your life with someone else. Just think about if you defined straight people by picking one sex act that they may or may not engage in and saying that this is what they are all about--you'd see how wrong you are.
