We have a microwave mounted over the stove, and the microwave has a vent under it that sucks op the air. On the top of the microwave, there is the end of the vent that expels the exhaust and points right to the top of the window (which we leave open when we turn the vent on). We know the neighbor next door, and he's never complained about our cooking or the smell; we usually use it when the kitchen gets a bit hazy and we need to pull the smoke out of the apartment. We would not allow that in that would be extremely unattractive and yes carry potentially noxious smells outside.
