In comparing notes with some of my coworkers it appears like a) I go to way more wedding then they do; b) but those they do go to tend to be to people whom they are much closer to and therefore they give larger gifts.</p> <p>I've begun to use registries a lot more for the gifts, because it's what the couple claim they want. But sometimes it gets tricky if all that's left is the small items like dishtowels, cork screws etc. Then what do you do - just buy lots of little things till it adds up to x dollars?</p> <p>In Orthodox circles weddings with 400+ people are quite common. I've been to some where there were over 700 people since the father on the side from which we were invited is the rabbi of a large shul, and had to invite his congregation, plus they have a large family themselves and a lot of friends as well. Whitsleblowing can be dangerous, but in tax cases it can be worse. I remember one tax attorney talking about a case where the Bookkeeper snitched to the IRS and it went to trial. Came out in testimony that the Bookkeeper was supposed to get a reward and she kept calling IRS jut about everyday asking about the money. An old friend of mine, a Wall Street accountant of very high esteem who still practices helped break the case with the help of another old friend who worked for Mr. Boesky. This other fellow, who was certainly no angel, supplied evidence that was very valuable in convicting Boesky. Unlike most places instead of four possible affairs it has three because Saturday afternoon is impractical. Not many people want to serve Bagels and Lox and have no music for a B'nai Mitzvah. Plus the cost of the Kosher food and supervision is much more expensive. A lot of these guys are looking at Reform Temples and other locations outside the Temples because it limits the business they can handle especially in tough economic times. Nice thing about temple catering is that if you're not one to get involved with a lot of running around and/or hire a party planner, they deal with a lot of the basics and you just add on and bring in extras as they suit you. You want to honor those that have had an impact in your life or have gotten you through a rough patch. I'd probably go with Bobby's estimate of 4-500. I don't think anyone will complain about $400.
