Anybody actually eaten there? Sign says bar AND restaurant. Walking past, people are actually inside sometimes, compared to Modus which was usally pretty empty.

Stopped by this past Friday. Good selection of drafts, by Austin St. standards (I was really just happy they had drafts at all). They will be serving food, but the waitress said the kitchen won't be opening for another 2 weeks. Service was friendly, and a much welcomed change over Modus. The waitress said the owner is the guy who also owns the Morrison's Pub on Metropolitan.

where is this place? Is it where Modus used to be?

Yup, where Modus used to be.

Maybe it will force Bonfire to get their act together! I haven't had issues with Bonfire like a lot of others have, but competition can't hurt.
Maybe more places like this will open if landlords are forced to lower rents.

I'm curious why 5 burros doesn't expand. There is always a wait and they could definitely use the room. Though any new place with bar and an abundance in TVs is welcome, I'll wait to try out the food before making a final judgement.

Oh I hope Tap House turns out to be good. For nightlife, I usually just go to Manhattan, but I would love a decent place around here for nights when I want to stay within easy striking distance of home. The other night I tried to go to Tropix in Rego to check it out and found out that I couldn't go in because I had sneakers on. Really? Sneakers? This is Rego Park people and I have seen Tropix on a weekday (when "formal" attire is not required), and it is NOT deserving of proper attire.
Then I went to Anna's, across the street and back towards my place a block or two, and found myself in a stuffy, quiet bar with just me, the bartender, and the friends that I went with, where I paid $7 plus tip for a Guinness.
Every time I try to go the other direction, to a place like 5 burros or Irish Cottage, all of the places I find are cramped as hell, and not because there are a ton of people, but because they are just so small.
I am very hopeful for Austin Ale House, but that is kind of a hike from where I live. I never thought I would be saying this, but in terms of local bars, I miss Long Island!
Ok, done with that rant -- I really like FH overall. I just wish for a friendly low-key bar with darts or a pool table or something similar and relatively inexpensive beer...

Question about this place. Does anyone know if they have NFL Sunday ticket and will play a bunch of different games on Sundays? If not, does anyone know what the phone number to this place is so I can call and ask?
Posted 1 year ago # -
I'm pretty sure they do. I was there last Sunday for the early games and they had about four games on at once (with the Giants on more than one screen). Place was packed, but it was also during the street fair. I had a good time and will definitely be back. Looking forward to their kitchen opening. I've eaten at the owner's other bar (Morrison's) a bunch of times and have always been very happy with the bar food they offer.

where is this place?

According to the above posts, it's on Austin, in the space where Modus Vivendi, the tea-salon-turned-cocktail-bar, used to be. Right next door to the Wine and Spirit Shop.
I welcome any place with good beers on tap. I've always wished Dirty Pierre's would offer something beyond Bud-level bottled beers.

I walked by yesterday and stopped in during the day. The electricians were still working and they had no idea when they'd be done. Anyway, they had about 10 beers on tap, which was fantastic. I don't remember them off hand, but they did offer Spaten, which is more than any other place did on Austin. I can't wait to give this place a try.

Wowza! Finally a good bar in Forest Hills. Let me tell you about my experience:
I got there and found that, indeed, lots of different NFL games were on, including the one I wanted to see (I had a good time despite the fact that the redskins lost).
My 4th beer was on the house, which was awesome.
At about halftime, they brought in FREE wings and french fries!
Not to mention that the service was great. I would be just finishing my beer when the bartender asked me if I wanted another. I am pumped and can't wait to visit at night sometime!

That's great to hear. Any idea if they'll have MNF specials, like 10 cent wings?
And did they have a food menu yet?Posted 1 year ago # -
No food menu yet. In fact it seemed like they brought the wings and fries in from somewhere else. I don't know what they will do for MNF, but I can't make it tonight, so if you go, let us know!

I walked past yesterday afternoon and it looked busy. Although I am not a big sports fan, I would love this place to succeed. With all the empty storefronts on that end of Austin, I would love to see more bars/pubs open up. How about a jazz lounge or a piano bar or a......
Is there a place to eat in back?

Or a cute cozy family-owned cafe with free Wifi, comfy couches.....one can only dream.

There is a cafe on Yellowstone and Clyde next to the nursing home called Munch. It has WiFi, couches, etc
Posted 1 year ago # -
I have seen Munch, but never went in. That just seems off the beaten path. I want that on Austin!

Yeah, I've been to Munch and I like it, although it's more of a coffee shop/diner than a cafe. Regardless, it's too far for me to just walk out of my apt for a lazy morning coffee. I want one on Austin closer to 71st!!!!

Is Tap Bar owned by the Modus owners? It seemed like they kept changing their business over and over.

It would be nice if The Austin Diner could be transformed. The food operation is already there and it is never that crowded. We need a Gordon Ramsey to come in and transform it. Couches can replace the booths and the menu could be updated. Munch also has things like poetry readings, etc. Munch is where it is because of high rents on Austin Street which would swallow any profit.

Agreed that Munch is way off the beaten path (at least from where I live), but based on the above comments, I'll need to take that walk ... soon!
Forester ... I'm dreaming right along with you!! :)

Foodie - Tap House is owned by the folks that own Morrisons on Metropolitan Ave and Continental (which by the way is another great bar in the area).
Dlover - I think the food came from Morrison's as I saw the owner loading up his car while I was at Morrisons watching football on Sunday. Hopefully the kitchen at Tap House will open soon. I eat at Morrisons regularly and enjoy the food alot. I'm expecting that the Tap House will be just as good.

Does anybody know if Tap House is serving food yet?

Austin Diner and Tbone diners are nothing great. I really hope the new Forest Hills diner is better since its closer to Gerard Towers. All the diners in Forest Hills I know of are lousy.
