  1. Many of you already know of the deplorable condition of the small sittng triangle park at 67th Av and QB. As mentioned earlier, I have just submitted to NYC Parks and Recreation the following proposal to clean it up:

Powerwash pigeon droppings from benches and sidewalk (Imagine people who utilize this park having to sit in this toxic setting!)
Parks is working on a way to eradicate the pigeon problem. Any ideas?
Paint the benches and perimeter bollards
Prune the trees of dead branches.
Plant in the 2 empty tree pits-- something creative for all to enjoy
    Rake and sweep the park.

The project should take approximately 2 hours.
Proposed dates: August 14th or 21st, depending on Park approval and volunteer support.
    Time: 9:00 - 11:00

I will need at least 8 volunteers.
    Free breakfast will be offered.
Let me know if you can spare the 2 hours.
I can drive anyone who needs a ride.

Thanks for your support in helping make Forest Hills a better place in which to live.
(I realize MacDonald Park needs more attention, but witnessing senior citizenz sitting in this poor excuse for a park, really hit a nerve.)

This is also a major bus stop. There were two benches facing QB which were removed quite a while ago--people can no longer sit up front while waiting for the poorly scheduled Q60--a senior citizen must sit on the side areas with the bus out of view (with poor vision to begin with) would be nice if they can add one more bench--there is more than enough room. During some of the hot evenings I would see senior citizens past 10pm, fans in hand, trying to get some fresh air.

  3. Yes Jewels. I am already aware of the missing benches and have advised my Parks Outreach Coordinator.

Issue summonses to anyone dropping bread crumbs for the pigeons. Won't solve the problem--but might help

we have our board meeting tomorrow night and one of my board members manages Flushing Meadows Park. Let me see if he (or anyone he knows) can help. I can also recruit some in my building. The 14th works better I think.

  8. The NYC Parks Dept has approved the project to spruce up the triangle sitting park at 67th Av and Queens Blvd. It will take place on Saturday, August 14th from 9:00- 11:00. It's a small project, nevertheless, our efforts will go a long way in bringing attention to the "park's" inferior condition.
I need about 10 volunteers to help clean, paint, plant, and prune.
I know it's the middle of summer, but you would be giving up just 1 or 2 hours of your time and making a big difference in our community.

Tools, gloves, and equipment will be provided.
    Breakfast is on the house.
    Book raffle will be held.
    Wear old clothes.
If you need transportation to the site, let me know.

Free breakfast and raffle for a little sweat equity.
Hey, how simple and worthwhile does a community project get?!

I hope to meet some of you out there on the 14th.
    Thanks.

    It's up to us!

Well, it's almost park clean up time! Anyone else planning on being there tomorrow morning? The weather should be cooperating.

My Mom complained that the park is dirty again. She stopped by on Sunday and some doofus dumped bread crumbs around the garbage cans - the new garbage cans. And the bench under that one tree in the middle is especially targeted by the pigeon bombers.
I walked by tonight on my way home from work - the poor plant is dying! Could some good samaritan who lives nearby and has some time come over and water the thing? It looked so pretty and refreshing when first planted!

So when is the Parks Department going to refurbish the park, like the politicos promised? Whom do we call? Help Me Howard on PIX11?

And when will they clean up the disgusting Queens Blvd?! I called 311 last week (Monday or Tuesday) to complain. They said they'll get to it within 5 business days but I'm feeling antsy! It is FILTHY!!!!!!!!

You need a small unobtrusive camera at the very top of the pole. Catch the offenders in the act and then fine them when you have the evidence. The word will get out quickly. Any cleanup won't remain if the people are slobs.

  14. I'm with you NYC_Lover. The park will be refurbished in October- new benches, trees, shrubs. BUT, we still need to resolve the pigeon problem!!!
Aa for the eyesore known as Queens Blvd, a formal complaint has been made to all agencies involved. Weed killer was sprayed 2 weeks ago, which is why you see the mounds of dead weeds lining QB. The endless piles of trash complementing this should be cleaned up by mid September as well.
If not, I will organize a cleanup project.
I have requested that our Councilwoman Koslowitz ponder the idea of putting a couple of Doe fund workers up on QB to take care of the constant mess.
Gennaro was able to fund 3 workers for the Briarwood section.
We desperately need it down here too!
    Call Koslowitz to complain:

    Thanks.

  15. BTW-- the plant was a freebee and temporary. Unfortunately I have caught dogs urinating on it. It's nearly dead now. We tried to save it. Perhaps throw a bottle of water on it next time you pass by-- maybe it will make it to October.

Steve, that's great news about the refurbishing of the park! I am looking forward to it.

Now, what can we do about the dirty sidewalks along Queens Blvd? Call Koslowitz? It has gotten so bad that I wonder how those brown stains can even be removed?

Pigeon Feeders have some sort of mental illness, I am convinced. Go help feed some poor and/or homeless people if you want to do some good.

I once read one of them say that they feed the pigeons because they otherwise wouldn't be able to find food in the city....and this is the root of the problem. If the pigeons did have an issue eating in the city, they would:

    A. Not breed as much/ babies would die off.
    B. Move elsewhere.

These idiots are unnaturally helping the pigeon population.

Well, we will get a break on Yom Kippur as observant pigeons usually abstain from eating that day. I wonder if pigeons only eat matzoh on Passover?

Seriously, these pigeon-feeders view themselves as kindly but they are so misguided. Corey has it right; I think they are more interested in feeding these disease-carrying birds than they would be in feeding people who desperately need a meal.
