Yes--there was a fire. From what I hear the fire went through the wall between Mehak and Reo Pharmacy (which just completed their move to the old greengrocers). The movie theater had a lot of smoke damage, but a day with all the doors wide open and a huge team of workers from Servicemasters who wiped everything down and ran heavy duty fans, the smoky smell is just about gone. I saw the owner of Mehak yesterday. He's fine, but I think his restaurant is pretty damaged.

Yeah, but it could have been SO much worse. A fire could easily have spread the whole block, taking out all the shops AND affecting travel on the LIRR given that many of them are suspended over the tracks.
I'm not sure of how much damage his restaurant suffered. I guess we'll see.

I was at the Kew movie theater yesterday, didn't know about the fire, but I can attest to the fact that smoke smell is still very heavy. In fact, some of us were coughing through the movie and at times it was hard to breathe. Eventually I got used to it, but I won't be going back there for a while. I think the smoke must be imbedded in all those heavy drapes.

Kew movie theater should show a revival of The Towering Inferno while the smoke smell is still in there. They can charge a few bucks more for smellivision :-D

They had people individually wiping down and vacuuming all the drapes. I went to the movies on Friday; was quite pleased at how there was very little odor. The thing is, they have to keep the fans running almost constantly for about a week.

Wiping down and vacuuming the drapes will help some, but really what's needed is actual cleaning and sometimes cleaning doesn't get the smell all the way out. I certainly would not want to be sitting on the cushions in a theater if there had just been a fire a day or two before. The smell from a fire permeates fabric for weeks and longer. My father's business had a severe fire years ago and unfortunately, I can still remember the smell like it was yesterday. A couple of years ago, my cousin's house was destroyed by fire. Servicemaster was sent in by her insurance company to do damage control. They were able to salvage some stuff, which was packed up and removed for cleaning, but even some of the clothing that was taken to a dry cleaner still had a faint post-fire odor after the cleaning.

If the air is not being sucked out of the theater somehow, it's going to take longer for the smell to dissipate. They can run fans all they want, but unless they are exhaust fans, all that's gonna happen is for the air to circulate, not get sucked out of the theater.

I think they should open all the exit doors, even the ones where the screen is and air the place out. On my way home I could still smell smoke on my coat. It's probably in all the seats. This is so upsetting because Kew is my favorite theater.
Pat, you're right - they should play "fire" movies to enhance the effect of the smell of smoke! Or they should have a "fire sale" on the price of tickets.

They really needed more than a day or two to air the place out. I don't know exactly how they did it, but Servicemaster actually was able to clean some of my cousin's upholstered chairs and salvage them, but it certainly didn't happen overnight.
