OK, friends - I need your advice. The noise and grime of the city is really getting to me, and I need a break. I'm looking for a quick escape the weekend of June 25th. I don't drive, so I need to get there by public transportation. I'd like to stay at an inn or hotel for a night. Access to swimming in fresh or salt water would be ideal (I'm allergic to chlorine). I'd like to spend under $300. Any suggestions?

A couple of things to check out
LIRR to Fire Island Ferry and then book the accomodations.
LIRR to the Block Island RI Ferry and then book accomodationsAmtrak to Mystic CT and look for accomodations.
Other CT/RI shore spots that can be access via Amtrak and are small enough to have access to water/shopping/restaurants via a short walk or taxi:
Essex, CT
Stonington Borough, CT
Watch Hill, RI
Newport, RI
These might be out of your $$ expectation, although I do nto know if that number you have is per day, just accomodations, or what you include in that numberMetroNorth and LIRR both have some cool overnight packages, as well as one day excursions that sound interesting, although they may nto all include the beach you mentioned

The North Fork is great too, and a little bit closer than Montauk. You can take the Hampton Jitney all the way out -- much more comfortable than taking the LIRR and having to change trains at Ronkonkoma. (You can pick up the Jitney in Manhattan or at the stop near Queens College.) Southold is a lovely town with a very nice public beach.

Here's an idea: take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for the weekend. You leave around 4, get in around 11 pm. There's camping on the Vineyard, so lodgings don't have to be hugely expensive though it might end up being a bit more expensive that you'd like.

The Long Beach Hotel is right across the street from the LIRR. Broadway is lined for miles with restaurants and stores--and traffic. Nice for the day--short trip on the LIRR--weekend NYC crowds

Re Martha's Vineyard: I probably should have said that they started direct service from Manhattan and NJ last summer. It's only on weekends, it takes about 6 or so hours, and it's not cheap. Here's the link.

Thanks! I realized after reading your suggestions that I can visit a good friend who is temporarily living on Martha's Vineyard. She said that weekend works great for her! I've only been to MV once, in February, when no one is there. It was beautiful.
The ferry sounds great IF you have nice weather. If I can take Monday off, I can fly jetBlue JFK to MV for $265 RT.

The Mohonk Mountain house is beautiful. They have a fresh water lake to swim in and a full spa. The grounds are beautiful and the food is excellent. They provide transport to and from the train and bus stations as long as you make arrangements in advance.

I forgot about Mohonk, it is very nice. AC isn't bad any of the Hotels on the beach will do, so yoou don't ahve to worry abou the pool. Plus the bus is on QB and you can get a food voucher and some chips.
