Those hotels/inns are gorgeous, but $500+ per night is way out of our price range!

Flo I went to A/C by myself last year, mainly because no one would go with me :) I was the youngest one on the bus, and I am not that young! The casinos are all pretty much the same. You can walk along the boardwalk, it is full of tourists and burnouts. It's somewhat sad to see what has happened to what was once a beautiful town. I remember going there as a kid and it was entirely different. I saw signs for outlet stores as we were approaching town but I didn't check any of that out. Unless you really like to gamble or want to see a show, it can be a day trip. The casino gives you like 5 or 6 hours and that's enought time to give them all your cash and walk around. I took some pics when I went; they are on my Facebook page. You should pretty much stick to the tourist areas, the regular town is very run down.
I've been to Montauk many times, it is a long ride but it's beautiful. I would take it any time over the pretentious and overpriced Hamptons.

I think I'll go to Montauk the next time I need a getaway. The lawyers in my office all go to the Hamptons -- yecccchhhhh.

Flo: AC is good because it's cheap and easy to get to if you don't have a car. The gambling isn't that big a deal you can take or leave it and I guess it depends on the show. But the beach is there and you can relax. I sit in the casino to kill time, other wise I'm in the sports bar. During the day I'm on the beach and I'll go to the health club after that, which is relaxing. I prefer to go to Absecom which is right before AC and play golf at the Mariott resort and sleep poolside afterward, but you need a car for that and it's boring if you're not a golfer.
Ocean Beach, Fire Island also is good if you don't have a car and there are Hotels you can stay in overnite.

I also recommend the North Fork. Gorgeous, so much quieter than the Hamptons. Lots of swimming on bay or sound beaches...no surf though. The Jitney will take you out there in 90 minutes from Fresh Meadows, and there are plenty of B&B's at every stop. There are also hotels in Greenport. As mentioned, Southold is beautiful, but I'm partial to Cutchogue, where my family's place is. Was just out there this past weekend. They actually had Johnny Winter playing at the nearby winery on Sunday night, but we couldn't stay that late.

Saw Sandy Hook advertised in the weekend paper. More convenient than the Hamptons--there is a 40 minute ferry available from Wall Street. Prices seem reasonable. Someone will have to comment on what it is really like there
