I can't believe they closed the UWS store. No more Hot Bagels and city Fairway runs for me!
I remember the bagel store on 108th Street and I think it was 64th Ave. When I was a kid, it was first time that I saw them boil the bagels before they put them in the oven. The man making the bagels worked at lightning speed. Ahhhh, the good old days!

H & H has been having tax issues for years--the place was seized at least once for non-payment of taxes and the owner took a plea on tax charges. They also filed for bankruptcy in February. I also vaguely recall that they had issues with the landlord.
Am sorry to see them go from UWS, because I would always pick up a few when stopping into Zabar's. At least the "factory" location on West 46th will still be around. That's probably where they do most of their business.

Montreal bagels are terrible.
It simply a stale french bread in the shape of a bagel.
A bagel needs that great chewiness to balance out that cream cheese.

Flo: The branch of the Tribe up in Montreal swear by them. Every Montrealer I know including the transplants always say they're better. The original bagel bakers in each City came from a different part of Eastern Europe and they retained the baking methods from those places. That and Smoked Meat(similar to Pastrami) are the big deal up in Montreal.

What was the name of the company that opened a few stores, some years ago, where they would place pre-formed pieces of dough in convection ovens and baked the bagels until the buzzer went off? They were horrible (naturally). The franchises didn't last too long.

Could be. But ours are still better. My Dallas cousin was raised in the Bronx until she was about 14 or 15, then her twig on the family tree ended up in Dallas, where she lived until she passed away at 73 a few months ago. She swore by NY bagels and I always brought her at least a couple of dozen every time I was down to visit. After her mastectomy 6 or 7 years ago, I sent her bagels instead of flowers and it made her quite happy. From time to time in her last months, she ordered from H & H and had them shipped. They were her comfort food.

It might be the hard water in NY with all those yummy minerals and deposits then.
I've been to St. Viateur, Fairmount and Schwartz in montreal and tried their wares twice just to make sure and I'll take H&H or even Murray's Bagels over either of them and would definitely take Carnegie deli of 8 years ago for sure over Schwartz's any day.
The flavor and profile is definitely different, but I'm a fan of NY =)

G-Man the Carnegie of a lot more than eight yrs ago. They cure the meat in Jersey today and not on the LES when Leo Steiner was running things. I was having lunch there with a coworker years ago and we were sitting next to these Jewish boys from Montreal who ordered seconds on the Ungeshtupped with extra helpings of cole slaw and Potato Salad and man that's major league eating. When they told us where they were from my buddy said to the effect he's been to Montreal and had deli there and they said "not like this they don't." The way these guys were packing it in you'd think they died and went to Deli Heaven. Was the best Deli I ever ate in ( and one of the most fun places to eat in the City), nothing ever compared to it. Leo was a great Foodie and when he passed away it was never the same. Parker was the guy who ran the money side he wasn't in Leo's class as a restauranteur.

Yiddish for overstuffed. The Carnegie served the regular sandwich which was tremendous, the Ungeshtupped and there was a triple decker which would have freaked out Dagwood Bumstead. These guys belonged in the eating Hall of Fame.

i like katz's fatty corned beef, their pastrami is very overrated and they really don't give you that much.
2nd ave deli had a decent pastrami. I 'm actually a fan of the stage coach deli's pastrami.

I get pastrami about once a month from the new 2nd Ave. Deli. It varies in quality: yesterday it was a little undercooked. But last month it was the BEST pastrami I had ever eaten. And I love, love, love their potato salad.

Personally I recommend the Dr. Browns Celray. Goes with either Corned Beef or Pastrami.
As for Katz's it was never the best, it was good enough (along with some heartburn), but usually a fun experience. But when you compare it to the fare I've had in Michigan you can understand why the tourist's love it. As for the Stage, over priced but good. 2nd Ave, good food great waiters (and waitresses) The best though was the Carnegie when Leo was there, there will never be anything like it again. As for today, they're living off their reputation from 25 years ago. They have menus in Japanese, I'm such a purist that it says "tourist trap." In the day there were tons of locals and celebrities there, with the tourists along with a huge take out and delivery business.

Sarge's Deli on Lex in the 30's makes a decent pastrami and corned beef sandwich. I believe they will even deliver to FH via Seamless Web.
