g-man, what comes to mind is that he was Hassidic, it is a tightly-knit community and things like this are a rarity there. It is a local news story and a tragedy just like any other 9 year old who is brutally murdered anywhere.

As far as I know, nothing, except to his family. But that doesn't make it any less sad or tragic. Whenever anyone is murdered it's a terrible story; this one is rather poignant though given the circumstances: sheltered boy, walking home from day camp alone for the first time. I think Biker's comment speaks to the inhumanity of violence against all children. This poor child was just the victim THIS time.

This IS so sad....you just never hear of things like this in a Hassidic community. But the death of any child is very upsetting to even those of us who are not parents. I cant imagine what goes thru the mind of a person who harms ANYONE, let alone children.

--@ Karen: I beg to differ. While you rarely hear of murder in Hasidic communities, there have been numerous cases of sexual abuse. My reading is that this is a sex crime that resulted in murder. If this little boy went off with the suspect, it's probably because he "read" (tragically incorrectly) that the suspect was "safe." But you are right about how broken the parent's must feel.

This case brings back memories of the Etan Patz case many years ago which was never "officially" solved. This is obviously a psycho who dismembered the body quickly. The kid was very insulated. He was 9 years old and this was the first time he was allowed to walk a few blocks on his own. There will be a news conference shortly.

The difference might be that there is speculation that Etan is alive. I remember seeing his mom on a stoop in SoHo right after the kidnapping. Etan would probably be in his thirties now.

Sexual abuse is everywhere. We just hear about it more in religious circles because these "holier than thou" people seem so flawless, so it's made a big deal.

It's not an everyday occurence in NYC, but it is a parents nightmare. You have to have eyes in the back of your head sometimes when they're smaller. They'll make a sudden move and disappear while you're eyes are on a clothing rack. In thirty seconds you find them, but there are pervs out there and you can't take anything for granted. Many of us grew up in a time where you could walk on the streets in your neighborhood even at six and there were few worries. Not today. Also this boy was Hassidic, from an insular society and probably a lot less streetwise than his secular peers. What those parents must be going through. If this is the guy, if there's any justice they'll just put him in the general prison population, gone inside of a couple of months.
Etan Patz was a six year old in SOHO who convinced his mother to let him walk a half a block alone to catch the school bus. That was about 1977, he'd be about 40 today. They pretty much know what happened although they can't prove it and the perp is either dead or in jail. It was a porter in one of the nearby bldgs who was a child molester, grabbed him off the street, raped and killed him and then put his body in the incinerator.

The dismembered body of a missing 8-year-old Hasidic boy was found early today at two locations in Brooklyn -- with police arrested a suspect in the grisly slaying who had the child's severed feet in his freezer, authorities said.
Police made the gruesome discovery after raiding a Kensington home and arresting 35-year-old Levi Aron, who led them to parts of missing boy Leibby Kletsky's body, stuffed in a red suitcase and hidden in a Dumpster outside an auto repair shop about two miles away, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said during a news conference this morning.
"This is every parents' nightmare," said Kelly. "We understand that. This is what makes this case so horrific."
Kelly said Aron and the boy did not previously know each other.
Cops said Aron, who works as a clerk at the Empire State Supply Co. hardware store on McDonald Avenue in Kensington, allegedly suffocated the boy before chopping him up. Kelly said they also found three knives in a butcher block inside Aron's apartment.
Kelly said Aron "panicked" when he saw the police response to find the boy and "that's why he killed the boy."
"We don't know precisely the communication between the man and the boy," Kelly added.
Kelly said Aron confessed to the murder and told cops what had happened after they asked him about the boy.
Charges against Aron are pending.

I'm very familiar with Boro Park. In fact, my daughter's wedding was about a block from where this evil being murdered this child. It's not at all unusual to see children walking by themselves there. And if Leiby was lost, as he apparently was, it was not unreasonable that he spoke to someone who was a fellow Jew. It was just his horrible misfortune to have picked someone who was clearly a psycho. It wouldn't surprise me to find him linked to other missing children.
I am so upset that I doubt I'll get anything much done today.

This is beyond a parent's worst nightmare. I don't know how a parent goes on after that or ever gets anything resembling closure. It's easy enough for me to think this man was not mentally well and that's the explanation, but if I were the parent, that wouldn't be helpful at all.
It is true many children die every day worldwide. It puts things into perspective, but at the same time, one case like this can make it more real. G-man, thanks for pointing the numbers out.

The more I read about the facts in this case the more upset I get over it. So far there is no evidence of sexual assault. I just don't understand what this guy was thinking even if he wasn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier. The poor kid just asked for directions, if he was around Dahill Rd he was at least a couple of blocks in the wrong direction.
One of the most important things a parent can do for a child is to teach them independence. But a kid that age even if you show them the route a couple times, is likely to screw up simply because most of them don't have a real sense of direction. The first routes they go by themselves are the ones they know from constant repetition in the neighborhood, ie. the candy store, pizza place, cleaners etc.

Azlee, that is perhaps the most upsetting fact that parents have to teach their kids. In Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods, there's a sort of built in trust. Frequently I've had people sleeping at my house who I've never met before, but because they don't travel on Shabbos, they needed a place to stay over for Friday night for whatever reason. I've been a guest at complete strangers homes, including in Boro Park. It's commonplace, although difficult for those outside of "our" community to comprehend. Drive up to the Catskills and you'll see Chassidim hitchhiking during the summer months. This is part of our way of life, and that's why Leiby felt comfortable approaching this monster. But the one lesson that every parent, of every ethniticity needs to tell their children is NEVER get into a car with a stranger.
We cannot understand why, of all the people he could have asked, Leiby asked this one.

The sad part is, there's always a rotten apple in every bunch. As with your community, our community in our parish is quite close and trusting, so on that level, I can relate.

jensays, i am very familiar with the orthodox community and i think it's a sad sign of our times that the traditional blanket trust for community members is in danger but that is not to say there have never been problems in the past. regardless of who committed the crime, it's a terrible, terrible tragedy and it's so important for parents to teach their children something about how the world works. a loss of some innocence is worth potentially keeping a child safe.

Years ago I was advising a client a Yeshiva on the importance of background checks, especially criminal ones for prospective teachers and staff. As the client claimed that a prior employer (often another Yeshiva) check would reveal such problems. Explaining to him they often don't for fear of lawsuits, he said they would tell us off the record because we're Orthodox. I proceeded to explain that's a load of crap and there's only one thing that the jewish people have in common, their attorney's card in their wallets. Sufficed to say they now do criminal background checks. There's an implied level of trust, that blinds them to reality, which no question this boy had. There is a lot of incidents of child molestation in these communities, as much as they try to keep a lid on it.
