Skyfoods opened over the weekend. It's an Asian market, but does have an aisle or two of American goods. The advantage of this place over others in the area is that it's brand new and has a parking lot right outside of the store. It's an alternative/supplement to picking stuff up in Target while your car is still parked at Sky View, or stopping at Western Beef after you leave. Oh, and in place of the long-empty Caldor at the intersection of Roosevelt and Main, there is the New World Mall, which reportedly has another Asian supermarket, a dim sum restaurant and individual food stalls, but no on-site parking.

Parking for the New World Mall is underground. I remember when they opened they offered free parking with a minimum purchase. It is the largest Asian supermarket in the NY area. It sells plenty of seafood including lobsters

Sorry for the confusion. Was reading online about these places and thought I read there was no parking at New World Mall. Guess not. Makes it a little more tempting and will likely do so at some point, just to check it out. Wonder how much they charge for parking. If it's true that there is no way to access parking directly from the shopping, that's a real drag if doing a lot of grocery shopping.

$30 minimum purchase at the supermarket gets you free parking at the new world mall. Was just there this weekend to check it out. Also went to sky view park to check that out as well. The 3 hours free parking was a great idea. It was actually very full when I went yesterday.

I didn't get out until late yesterday and got to Sky View after 6. It was insanity in the parking garage. The garage on levels A (BJs) and B (Sky Food and some of the restaurants) was crowded, but given the day of the week and the time, it didn't shock me. When you drive in, there's a directory of what is on each level, but once you're in there, it's utter chaos and not well-marked at all.. I managed to find my way to level B to go to Sky Food, but the traffic pattern is very confusing to get from B to A and if you are not careful, you end up in the exit lane for Roosevelt Avenue. But I circled around again and finally spotted the down ramp, which I figured had to be for level A/BJ's and it was.
Stockguru, is it true that you have to go outside to get from the New World Mall into the parking lot? Did you notice a radical difference in merchandise from J Mart to Sky View market?

The new world parking lot is not the greatest. It is separated by a loading dock on the ground floor. The other issue is getting in and out of the parking ramp. The sidewalk is full of pedestrians that don't bother looking at the light. I've heard that they now hired someone to direct traffic because it took forever to get into and out of the parking lot.
The merchandise is some what different between J Mart and Sky View but it depends upon whether or not it matters to you the difference between Japanese/ Korean and Chinese merchandise. They all have some common characteristics but to those that specialize in the cuisine, there are distinct differences.

Thanks for the info, stockguru. I'm no hardcore Asian cook by any means. I have a few favorite things that I like from Asian markets. I can get them all at Hong Kong Market on 37th Ave. and Main, or most of them at Sky Food. I'll check out J Mart just for the heck of it. I probably would experiment with
Yesterday, while I was at Sky Food, I took a shot and bought some pork marinated in some sort of soy-type marinade with black beans in it. Seemed to be small pieces of pork rib still on the bone, sliced into smallish pieces. Was pretty good and not peppery, which I thought it might be. And I pretended to myself that I cooked dinner, when all I did was saute marinated pork and make some rice.

Skyview is great with the 3 hr parking. I can kill a lot errands in one shot with target, sky food and bed bath now without having to go into the heart of flushing during the weekends.

On the topic of cars. the entire Sky mall is about 2 blocks down from the last stop on the 7 train. If you have unlimited metrocard to burn, and don't have any Asian Markets, BJ's or Targets closer to you it might still be worthwhile if you live by 7 train. I see lots of neighborhood people walk it (my walk is about 20min) for me that beats waiting 20min for bus/ NR train on weekends just to get to the other Target/BJ's.
And since SkyFOods is relatively new supermarket, they are doing these sweet 3 day specials to hook people into coming into the stores.
