Seems like it's been overrun with spammers. I can't even find posts that I've written, due to all of the "free movies" and "shoes for sale" and crap like that. UGH.
Does anyone moderate this forum?

There is no moderator. The owner of the site is occupied with other things and basically uninterested. In April, someone who was apparently concerned about content and the meanness that she perceived was happening, either volunteered or was approached to be moderator. She started punishing people by either permanently or temporarily banning them, and shut down accounts of people with multiple screen names after warning them, but at least one of those people claimed that it was done very quickly, without time to shut down the "extra" accounts. Chaos, to put it mildly, ensued. Ultimately, the entire history of the forum was lost. The owner popped up, apparently cut off the moderator, added a "search" function, then went underground again.
This thread pretty much covers it.

Well, that would have to be Steve. And Steve doesn't want to be involved. Barring that, we need a moderator to do that. Once you get into that, the moderator will ultimately moderate. Being human, they will moderate according to their, and the membership's, idiosyncrasies. Don't forget, at first, Poprocks was OK. The spam was gone. She approached all of us about the multiple users, and many if not most of us were OK with limiting accounts to just one name. But some, in fact most of us, did not like removing the extra accounts of "fun" personalities, and wanted exceptions for them. But the main problem came when people complained about offensive posts. Some were truly offensive, but then the issue became where to draw the line. At first, the obvious racists were blocked, but it VERY quickly devolved into blocking comments that some people didn't like, which in turn altered the level of discourse because missing posts led to misunderstanding the entire thread. Then people perceived as personally argumentative were blocked. Then the entire older (meaning longer term, not necessarily age) QCF members all got riled about it, while some interestingly timed newcomers suddenly appeared to praise the new system. Ultimately it led to the explosion (figuratively) of the entire QCF database and its resurrection, minus moderator. So...basically the problem remains. It would be great for a moderator to delete spam. But the moderator will inevitably have to deal with myriads of other issues, and being only human, will eventually give in, in some way, to the most persistent kvetchers, or their own egos. Some people here have claimed that they could moderate the board with minimal interference, But somehow....I don't think they would remain as idealistic (or deluded) after several weeks of the crap a moderator has to put up with.

Is there a way to have some sort of spamblocker on the site, so that maybe no moderator would be required? It's one thing when a single spam item pops up here and there, but these serial spam items are particularly annoying.

A person who thinks they can really only delete spam and ignore any requests for other removals should contact Steve privately, set up a non-identifying email just for that, and delete spam only. Not even check that email address. But I agree, it's a potentially slippery issue.

If you "ignore" a particular spam poster, it removes all of the spam posted under that name. Having been around to witness what happened on this site when it imploded, I can honestly say that I would rather deal with the spammers than have another incident with a moderator-cum-Nazi who banished posters and distributed time-outs like they were lollipops at a pediatric dentist's office.

At this point the only option is to ignore the poster. Steve isn't around. He said so. Just because some weird things happened when the previous moderator was here doesn't mean that all moderators are "Nazis" or would act the same way. There are many other blogs and message boards that have moderators and that function very well. All of the spam on here is getting really annoying and it doesn't create a very welcoming environment. I think it could be very helpful to this forum if someone were to moderate--at least to delete all of the spam and keep it off of the forum.

Yes but that's how The Candy started out Rhett. First the spam went, then it was the penalty box for people she didn't like and the deleting of multiple names but only for those she chose to delete. It would be great if the spam would go away. But the only way is if Steve hands over the keys again or does it himself. I don't see either of those things happening.

One way to deal with the spam issue is for all of us to go over to the forum bugleg set up for us. I believe he set it up so that spam is deleted. The site is still up and running - just no one is posting.

I'm quite sure that there is software out there that can catch spam. I have a friend who runs a very interactive blog, and he relies on such software so that he doesn't have to monitor the site 24/7. It's not 100% accurate, but it's decent.

Jen---there is also software to back up forums. I was surprised that when the forum disintegrated that there was no backup. Steve is not interested in making any investments to continue QC. Bugleg went out of his way to start a new forum with additional features such as private messageing and he actively eliminates spam. I agree with QM--we have a choice

The layout @ queensneighbors.com is a default choice--I'm sure with some futzing it could be pared down to be more streamlined while maintaining a bunch of the features. If there is a group of motivated members that wants to help make design decisions (and use the forums!) I'd be happy to dive in and get working.
