I start working in Brooklyn a week from today. I'm ok taking the R train going in (just bought a kindle to pass the hour's time for a good chance at a seat - don't mind the local). I will be working by Metrotech center. Anybody have any suggestions on what train to take home? I get out at 4:30pm. I don't mind transferring trains if it means a better ride home.

take the F both ways. You will probably get a seat in the morning and def get one in the evening.

Thanks Biker. I'm going to leave super early before 6:30am and maybe grab some breakfast. I was just wondering what to do about going home at 4:30pm but the F train sounds good!

The F train would empty out in midtown on the way in and would be faster than the R. Since the F train now goes thru 63rd Street to Roosevelt Avenue you avoid the backups as trains near the LIC tunnel. Will definitely get a seat going home--esp when you reach 14th Street, 34th Street--major transfer points

on your way to work at 6:30, you will be able to lay across a whole bench if you want.

Biker's right, but the R is certainly an option if something happens.

Pat-- you might have a quicker commute if you take the R to 59 Street and switch for the 4 or 5 (which runs express for quite a bit of midtown)to Brooklyn/MetroTech. Considering the time you are leaving, you could also take the E to Queensborough Plaza, switch for the R to 59th (1 stop), and then switch for the 4 or 5.
Then of course, there's the LIRR to Penn (you could catch the 6:39) and the 2 or 3 to Metrotech. (probably the quickest, but most expensive)

If you check http://www.hopstop.com, and you put in the time that you are leaving, they will give you not only your route, but how long that route takes.

Thanks. It's great to have so many options. I'll probably shake them up a little bit once I get settled in. I love the area I'll be working in. Today's my last day in claims! Yippee!!! Lots of food, friends and well wishes. I'm being treated to lunch at my favorite restaurant in the area called Luigi's. They even got a cake with my name on it. I feel loved.

Take Hop Stop travel times w/a grain of salt, they are usually way longer/slower than reality.

Dont you mean "QUEENS PLAZA". QueensBOROUGH Plaza is the above-ground stop for N/7 trains.

Congrats Pat. As someone who used to go to BK for parties by the Metrotech area, my advice based on experience is to use the R as a back-up. Take the F.
Just a heads up: I don't know if you've explored the area yet, but there's an Applebee's on DeKalb. Lots of coffee shops and cool stores (Modells and all) around there too. I haven't been there in about a year but it's always fun over there, day or night. (I know, I'm a bit too brave for my own good.)

You are all giving me such great advice! Thank you. I'm going to refer to this thread often. I would also like to thank everyone for their best wishes. Shayna we should all get together for a QC happy hour to celebrate new beginnings.
I'm going to take the F train tomorrow. I'm so excited to be working around that area. I'm just concerned that I will go broke with all the great restaurants and stores there.

Pat, don't forget the new DeKalb market.. Try Robicelli's cupcakes- very sophisticated flavors and not overly sweet. SO good!

The F train worked like a charm both ways today getting to and from Metrotech. Got a seat getting there and coming home. Less than a 40 minute ride. Thanks!

I'm going to love it! It's the exact opposite of my old job. No ringing phones with screaming people at the other end, no being chained to a desk, no manager constantly up my ass - I can even choose my own hours. I'm doing 7:30am - 4:00pm. Alot better than my old hours of 8:00am - 7:00pm!
If I was wearing a hat in the street today I would've thrown it in the air just like in the beginning of The Mary Tyler Moore show :)
