Just curious if anyone has any experience with these two hospitals, especially the maternity ward. I found out that for some reason Jamaica hospital is not being covered by my insurance. My wife is being sent for her first sonogram to Manhasset. However that seems a bit far considering we live in Kew Gardens. It is still very early, so I can switch hospitals if necessary and perhaps even insurance to go to Jamaica if it's a better place. Any other hospitals in the area we should consider?
Really appreciate any input on this!

No experience with childbirth--but if LIJ Hospital is on your insurance--they have a separate children's hospital (used to be called Schneiders). Easy trip from KG--the Q46 stops in front of the hospital when a car is not handy.

Both of my sisters had their kids at LIJ and my brother's ex-wife had their kids at North Shore-Manhasset. The reality is that neither is all that far and unless you wait until the last possible instant to head there once your wife goes into labor (or if she's having a scheduled c-section), you will have plenty of time to get to either of those hospitals from Kew Gardens. Both hospitals have extensively renovated the maternity wards and render generally excellent care.
Were I picking a hospital to deliver a baby in among North Shore, LIJ and Jamaica, without question, I would pick LIJ, for the very simple reason that they have literally one of the preeminent children's hospitals in the country in a building attached to the main hospital. My younger sister had a generally smooth pregnancy with her first child, but some issues developed during and shortly after her daughter's delivery, requiring her to spend time in the NICU and requiring certain pediatric specialists. Given the issue, time was critical, and having one of the best children's hospitals in the country only steps away was very helpful and reassuring. Happily, her daughter is just fine now. And when my sister delivered her son, even though she had relocated to Hicksville, she still delivered at LIJ.

NSUH is far superior to Janaica. Both LIJ and NSUH are the same network now.

I've had both my children at North Shore...love my doc and the nurses were great.

To be clear, I don't have a particular issue with North Shore, it's just that I like the idea that the children's hospital is right on the grounds of LIJ.

North Shore: Great doctors and hospital but a haul to get to if you are attempting it in rush hour.
If your child is cooperative and allows for a late night trip, it's an easy ride. 15 minutes possible.

Jamaica is a very good hospital for trauma. They cover the Airport and handle Police officers who are shot. As for other things LIJ/NSUH are much better, they're major teaching hospitals. No 2 son was born at LIJ, as Shayna said it's next to the Childrens Hospital which is one of the best in the country and our Pediatrician had privileges there so it was a no brainer when the OB gave her choice of NSUH or LIJ. We had the amnio done At NSUH because they have some state of the art equipment they encourage their docs to use. When you look for pediatricians many in this area are affiliated with LIJ, so if your wife can deliver there they can examine the baby at the hospital.

You don't mention whether or not you have a car, but it's a very short drive to NSLIJ or LIJ. Although Schneider Hospital is on the premises of LIJ, for a normal delivery you probably won't need it. Our first child was a premmie, so he was taken immediately to the neonatal, but with the others that was, thankfully, not required. If you have a choice, go with the LIJ hospital family.

Yeah, if you get shot, you want to go to Jamaica, or maybe Elmhurst. If you're having a baby, you want to be at LIJ or North Shore.

It's a well-known fact, if you are shot in Manhattan, go to Bellvue; if you are shot in Queens, go to Jamaica hospital. I don't believe racism even enters into the equation here.

Definitely go with the North Shore hospitals. North Shore LIJ or Manhasset are only really about 15 minutes off the Grand Central from Kew Gardens without traffic (but I have to say even in rush hour it's not that terrible). If there is traffic, you can always just take Union Tpke straight to LIJ.

I vote for NSUH.. My son was born there a few months back. They converted all the rooms to private. So as the new daddy, you can stay there the whole time, plus have access to the room's shower and sofa :) I think they are in progress of doing that at LIJ as well.

A friend of mine gave birth in Jamaica and did not have a good experience.
I think both other haspitals mentioned are good!
I had my son at Mt Sinai in the city only because it was easier for me to trek to all the appointmens as I work in the city as well. I heard that the best baby hospital is NY Presbyterian.

I'm a big fan of LIJ and we're expecting to have our son delivered there.
They actually stick to appointments!
The doctors in the maternity ward have been top notch so far.
north shore is also pretty good, but the delivering ob gyn was affliated with lij so we went with that.

David, see if you can get the birthing room. It's so nice to be in a normal room as opposed to an OR type environment, plus the mom stays put after the delivery, instead of being hauled off to a recovery room.

I had my baby there 2 years ago and most rooms were semi-private. There was a hefty extra fee for private rooms. There is one thing about that hospital I didn't like. In the summer or early fall, you may endup dealing with inexperience residents who are fresh out of med school. I had better experience with my son who was born in January at the same hospital

@marganda - they finished the conversion around May.
@ShaynaMadel/@DavidBrent - our insurance only covered semi-private rooms, but we haven't seen a bill or even an hospital statement. i think everyone's insurance only covers semi-private rooms. so, I *think* that NSUH must bill the insurance companies at semi-private rates, otherwise they would have a huge number of complaints. you probably want to call the hospital to confirm if you are concerned.
