I agree Steve. I wish we had a decent library. It should have old newspapers from the area on microfilm, for example. Good Science and Math books would also be great. Why is the selection so despicable?

can you elaborate on all the ways the forest hills library is terrible besides the poor science and math selections? it is always busy whenever i go.
anyway, they seem like there have a lot of adult programming in addition to children’s stuff: http://www.queenslibrary.org/i.....anch_id=FH

Small, unimpressive collection; unattractive; badly designed. That’s pretty much it! I’m sure it’s always busy, but it’s the only library around.

i can’t really respond to the unimpressive collection, the design, or how unattractive it is because those are pretty subjective assessments but there are several other libraries nearby - another actually located in forest hills (metropolitan and 70th ave). the rego park site is not too far away either on 63rd. then there’s lefrak city, kew garden hills, richmond hill, briarwood. you do have options.

As someone who walks everywhere, though, there’s no other library that would be worth the time and effort for me to visit, and I can’t imagine I’m alone on that.

i dislike the queens libraries but for different reasons. i’ve been to quite a few of their branches and as far as milieu, forest hills has one of the better set ups.

So Queens libraries are in for a $7 million budget cut, and that’s kind of disgraceful considering the Queens library system is already sorta embarrassing. Just think of how it’ll be when it has even less money. Y’know, when I moved to Forest Hills, the library on 71st was terrible, but then it closed for a major renovation. When it reopened–yep, still terrible. Seems to me like the kids’ offerings aren’t bad, but libraries aren’t just for kids. Can’t we piggyback on the NYPL like the Bronx and Staten Island do?
Anyway, like at least one other local blogger, I was asked to post a link to an online petition to stop the bleeding, and because I think libraries are a vital community resource, I’ve already done so, right there, earlier in this sentence.
